Portrait Painting in Oils

10 weeks, May 18 - July 27, 2019 (No Class July 13th)

Saturday mornings, 10am-1pm

In this class, students of all levels will be introduced to classical, indirect portrait painting methods and techniques. The first half of the class will focus on classical painting methods, while the second half focuses on contemporary portrait painting ideas and processes. Students new to painting are encouraged to do master studies for the first half, and all students will compose their own paintings for the second half. 

Throughout the course, students will be shown the various fundamentals of classical painting and the principles of art making that apply to and extend beyond portrait painting. Topics to be discussed will include but not limited to composition, value, colour theory, layering techniques, the role of photography in contemporary portraits and more. 

Each week will begin with a demonstration and builds upon previous class discussions. Students will work on their paintings with individual feedback. There will be opportunity for group critiques as well. Students are expected to finish 2 completed paintings, not including studies and sketches. 

A list of recommended materials will be provided upon registration.
