In this class, students of all levels will be introduced to classical, indirect portrait painting methods and techniques. Throughout the course, students will be shown the various fundamentals of classical painting and the principles of art making that apply to and extend beyond portrait painting. Topics to be discussed will include but not limited to composition, value, colour theory, layering techniques, the role of photography in contemporary portraits and more.

Each week will begin with a demonstration and builds upon the previous class' discussions. Students will work on their own paintings from their reference of choice with individual feedback. (Beginners are highly recommended to do master copies before moving on to their own references.) There will be opportunity for group critiques as well. Students are expected to finish 1-3 completed paintings, not including studies and sketches.

A list of recommended materials will be provided upon registration. (See below for All Materials Included option.)

Light refreshments and beverages will be provided. Limited spots available.

First time oil painting?

Purchasing oil painting materials can be overwhelming for the first-time painter. The cost of canvas & panels, paints, oil, solvent, brushes, etc can add up very quickly, even for student-grade materials. If you're not yet decided about oil painting and don't want to spend a lot of money for a one-time use, you can use my materials for an additional fee. I will setup your work area for you, and provide everything you will need with my artist-grade paints and materials that I use in my own work. I will clean up for you as well. You just need to bring yourself.

All Materials Included for Portrait Painting in Oils ($180)
